Your career in communication sciences begins by directly helping people connect with their world. As a speech-language pathologist, your day might be spent in a school using picture cards and games to help a child overcome a lisp, or in a hospital guiding a stroke survivor as they relearn to speak and swallow. As an audiologist, you’ll work in a clinical setting, using an audiometer in a sound-proof booth to test a patient's hearing before fitting and programming their first hearing aid.

Most graduates start with a supervised clinical fellowship before earning full licensure. With experience, you can specialize in high-demand areas like pediatric feeding or cochlear implants, move into a university teaching role, or open your own private practice. This specialization and experience are where earnings really grow. The field is expanding quickly, with strong demand for both speech-language pathologists and the postsecondary instructors who train them. While AI may help draft treatment plans, the core of your job—the hands-on therapy and empathetic patient connection—remains a deeply human skill.
